Episode # 173 - The Indie Theater Life: Debargo Sanyal
nytheatrecast’s latest installment of “The Indie Theater Life” features a one-on-one conversation with actor Debargo Sanyal, whose rapidly growing list of credits includes performances in Port Authority Throwdown, the recent NYMF production of Love Sucks, East Village Chronicles, Vol. 4, and Pulling the Lever (which was published in the NYTE anthology, Plays and Playwrights 2006). His latest project is Charles Mee’s new musical, Queens Boulevard (the musical), which opens this month at Signature Theatre Company.
Debargo talks to moderator Michael Criscuolo about how he first got interested in theatre, and about his start as an actor upon moving to New York. He also talks about the experience of working with both Charles Mee and his fellow castmates on Queens Boulevard. And, he brings up some insightful and fascinating points about the advantages and challenges of being an actor of color in today’s industry.
Debargo also has some surprising responses to our “nytheatrecast Hot Seat” questionnaire. Check out which show he would travel back in time to go see!
And, if that weren’t enough, it should also be pointed out that not only did Debargo appear in Pulling the Lever, but he was also a member of the play’s writing team. Clearly, an all-around talented gentleman.

Great interview. I saw his wonderful performance in “Port Authority Throwdown” one year ago, and look forward to seeing him in “Queens Boulevard”.

I came across the New York Times review that raved about Debargo Sanyel’s performance in ‘Women of Trachis’ earlier this year, and when I went to see the show for myself, I saw that he was, indeed, terrific. I will now certainly try to catch this new ‘Queens Blvd’ production.

I saw a preview performance of “Queens Blvd” on Friday night, and loved it. It was jam-packed with both humor and heart. Debargo Sanyal was downright hilarious. I previously saw him in the play “Commedia Dell Smartass” two years ago, in which he also shined. It’s great to see such a talented guy doing so well.

Very interesting interview. And I also saw a preview showing of QUEENS BLVD last week and had a fantastic time. And as the above posting mentioned, Debargo Sanyl makes a big impression with his delightful comic timing and range of dialects–a very funny young man in a very funny, and touching, whirlwind of a play. I also quite enjoyed Signature’s previous production of IPHIGENIA 2.0. These are the first two Charles Mee plays I have ever seen, and I rather like his imaginative and unique approach to playwriting.

What a good interview. (”Laramie Project” stands out in my mind as well as a truly memorable visit to the theater) I have been a fan of this young actor’s ever since I saw him in the hilarious FringeNYC play “Browntown” at the Lucille Lortel a few yrs ago. He is always a standout in every production I have had the pleasure of seeing him in (especially “Port Authority Throwdown” last year). My wife and I just bought our tickets to “Queens Bolevard”.
