Episode # 304 - Playwrights in Conversation: Matthew Freeman and J. Scott Reynolds

J. Scott Reynolds and Matthew Freeman

J. Scott Reynolds and Matthew Freeman

Matt Freeman returns for another episode of nytheatrecast's Playwrights in Conversation. His guest is J. Scott Reynolds of Handcart Ensemble. Matt and Scott have known each other for many years and have worked together on occasion. Scott will be directing an adaptation for the stage of Simon Armitage's radio play, Homer's Odyssey. This was originally produced in 2004 on the BBC.

Matt notes that Handcart tends to produce many Greek classics but with a difference and he urges Scott on to explain this unique approach to their productions. Scott talks at length about why language is so important on the stage and why the adaptations of the poets he has used work so well when dealing with an adaptation. There is much that can be learned from this discussion.

You may be surprised to learn which modern playwright Scott considers the gold standard and how Matt agrees and adds his own comments as to why this is true.
