Martin Denton welcomes playwright Jon Marans to the nytheatrecast. Jon is the author of a new play entitled The Temperamentals which deals with the founding of, probably, the first gay rights organization in the U.S.. Jon tells many tidbits about this largely unknown bit of history which began in the '50s. It is a love story between the communist, Harry Hay and the designer, Rudi Gernreich.
Jon talks of how he became interested in Harry Hay and the organization he started, the Mattachine Society. Repeatedly what comes through during this discussion is how unknown both the people involved and the Society they formed are to 21st century people.
